City on Twitter

Since its inception in 2006, Twitter has evolved into one of the most popular social media channels in the world. Twitter lets users send and receive brief updates, which are capped at 140 characters of text, as most people know. But governments are using the power of the Tweet for more than just casual updates.

Governments use Twitter for Emergency Alerts, Traffic Notices and More

Like for the City of College Station, the most practical government applications for Twitter are in public safety and emergency notification. Since 2009, Twitter has been the city’s primary communication tool for emergency updates, traffic reports, election results, and everyday tips for its residents and 60,000+ college student population.

I helped design and launch the city’s original Twitter platform, and I continue to assist with graphics, messaging, and emergency support.
